For SpaceX employees

Your SpaceX equity is now tradable. What is your plan?

With the stock public, decisions that used to wait now have dates: when shares vest, when restrictions lift, how much tax is withheld, and how much of your net worth rides on one employer. I help you turn that into a written, repeatable policy.

Your next vest would move company stock above the range set in your plan. Let's review withholding, the trading window, and the next diversification step before the shares arrive.

Where the decisions are

Four things SpaceX employees ask about first.

What kind of award do I hold?

SpaceX's public filing says it grants restricted stock units, restricted stock awards, and non-statutory stock options. Each is taxed differently, and your grant agreement settles which you hold.

When does it vest?

The filing describes several schedules, such as a one-year cliff followed by quarterly vesting, or a six-month start followed by quarterly vesting. We map each of your vest dates to a tax and cash estimate.

Is enough tax withheld?

Withholding at vest is often below what you will owe at a higher bracket. We compare what was withheld with a projected liability and plan for the gap.

When can I sell?

The post-IPO lockup is released in stages. Your company's notices give the dates for your shares, and trading windows and blackouts still apply. We build the plan around that calendar.

Award and vesting descriptions come from SpaceX's public filings and may change. Your own grant documents govern.

A repeatable framework

Decide the policy once—not after every vest.

01

Measure real exposure

Count shares, unvested awards, salary, bonus, and career risk tied to one company. The exposure is larger than the brokerage balance suggests.

02

Give the stock a job

Hold it deliberately, fund a near-term goal, or diversify. Each purpose calls for a different level of risk.

03

Set a target range

Choose a range you can follow in a strong or weak quarter, with a written rule for what happens above it.

04

Choose the pace

Sell at vest, sell on a schedule, or sell over time as restrictions lift. We compare them with after-tax numbers, not a guess about the price.

05

Assign the proceeds

Taxes, a cash reserve, a home, debt, retirement, or a diversified portfolio. Selling is only half of the plan.

Common questions

Questions SpaceX employees ask.

General information, not individualized tax or investment advice. Your grant documents and tax situation govern the actual answer.

Should I sell SpaceX shares when they vest?

It depends on your goals, your tax situation, and how much of your net worth already depends on one company. There is no single right percentage. A written policy makes the decision repeatable instead of a new debate at every vest.

Does tax withholding at vest cover what I owe?

Not always. Withholding is a set rate, while your actual liability depends on your total income, state, and other compensation. We project the difference before the vest so it does not arrive as a surprise.

How do the lockup releases affect me?

Lockup terms decide when a sale is possible, not when it is wise. Releases are staged, and your company's trading policy and any blackout periods still apply to you. Check your company's notices for the dates that apply to your shares, then we plan around them.

Before the next vest

Bring your grant documents. Leave with a plan.

We'll review what you own, what is coming, the risk you carry, and what the equity is meant to accomplish. Then we'll build a policy you can follow through future vests and market changes.
